Trust as public health infrastructure
Public health depends on collective behaviour, so trust functions as infrastructure. Health misinformation spreads faster than corrections do.
Why it is hard to measure
- Messaging that works with one community can fail with another for reasons that have nothing to do with the evidence.
- Trust attaches to messengers, not only messages.
- By the time a message has visibly failed, the intervention has usually already failed.
- Testing messages before deployment is far cheaper than repairing them after.
